DTC 42: Problem in Shift Control System
  1. Check whether the indicator light indicates another code.

Does the indicator light indicate another code?

YES - Perform the Troubleshooting Flowchart for the indicated Code(s). Recheck for DTC 42 after troubleshooting.

NO - Go to step 2.

  1. Check for deterioration in the quality of ATF.

Does ATF have deteriorated?

YES - Replace ATF (see page 14-320). Test-drive the vehicle under the same conditions the code was appeared, then recheck.

NO - Go to step 3.

  1. Measure the stall speed RPM in position (see page 14-315).

Is the stall speed over 3,500 rpm (min-1)?

YES - Replace the transmission.

NO - If the stall speed is below 2,000 rpm (min-1), replace the lower valve body assembly. If the stall speed is 2,000-3,500 rpm (min-1), go to step 4.

  1. Drive the vehicle at 30 mph (50 km/h) constantly for several minutes.
  2. Check the engine speed with respect to vehicle speed (see page 14-312).

Is the engine speed within the specification?

YES - Replace the lower valve body assembly.

NO - Replace the transmission.
